Welcome back to the online home of Sunrise Dental. It is hard to believe that February is almost over! We sure hope that your smile will be camera-ready by the time Spring finally arrives. After all, that is the best time of the year to be in the Carolinas. So, if there is anything that you would still like to address about your teeth or gums, just know that Dr. Vice can help you get great results fast with one of our innovative cosmetic dentistry solutions. Keep reading to hear more about the possibilities, and then be sure to get in touch with our team to schedule your Spring smile makeover consultation!

Cosmetic Bonding

If you need a little help, but don’t want to make a big investment of time or money, we have just the thing for you. Cosmetic bonding is an extremely quick and cost-effective solution, as far as cosmetic dentistry goes. For this treatment, we simply apply a layer of tooth-colored adhesive materials and smooth it over until you have a blemish-free smile.

Invisalign Clear “Braces”

You are never too old to get a better-looking, healthier smile. And who says you need braces to fix crooked, crowded, or gapped teeth? The Invisalign clear aligner system that we use is far more comfortable than metal braces. What’s more, they are also removable, which makes eating easier, and cleaning a breeze. No dietary restrictions or weird tools will be required. The best part is that your treatment can be completed in only a matter of months, not 2-3 long years!

Teeth Whitening

If your yellow teeth have got you feeling blue, our professional whitening procedures can brighten your day. Our safe and reliable methods involve using an ultra-strong bleaching agent that is applied in a custom mouthpiece. We currently offer Sinsational Smile®, a comfortable whitening system that can offer you a brighter, more beautiful smile in just 20 minutes! And get this: that option is also only $99 right now! In addition, we offer Opalescence take-home whitening. One way or another, we’ll get you smiling big again.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are thin covers made of porcelain. They can be used to cover up years of dental damage. Here’s the deal: veneers get attached directly to the front of your teeth after a layer of enamel is removed. This removal is a minimally invasive step and simply ensures that they will be a good fit. When dental veneers are cemented to the front surfaces of your teeth, the porcelain material becomes extremely sturdy and resistant to damage. Veneers are highly resistant to staining from coffee, tobacco, and other staining agents. If you are interested in hiding chips, cracks, stains, discoloration, misshapen teeth, or minor alignment issues, this is your best bet.

Reshaping & Recontouring

Sometimes it isn’t teeth that cause the most grief. But take heart! We can correct an overly gummy smile with our laser gum reshaping therapy. This laser system allows us to reshape your gum line involving less healing time, less discomfort, and a lot more precision than when it had to be done by hand. We can also recontour your teeth using the same laser technology.

Let’s Do This!

To get started on your transformational journey, just contact one of our convenient NC locations today! Chapel Hill: 919-914-0844, Raleigh 919-578-9923, Durham: 919-213-9757 Cary: 919-902-5121!

Untreated Sleep Apnea Is A Silent Killer

Did you know that, according to many sources, Jerry Garcia–the affable Grateful Dead guitarist–suffered from sleep apnea? In fact, his fatal heart attack back in 1995 may have been due in part to this dangerous condition. You see, if left untreated, sleep apnea can wreak havoc on your entire system. In addition to the extra stress put on your body due to lack of quality sleep, the lack of oxygen when you do sleep is a big problem. Hypoxemia (lack of oxygen in the blood) can be linked to high blood pressure and other cardiovascular complications. Untreated sleep apnea can also lead to type 2 diabetes, liver problems, daytime fatigue, and other total-system issues. It can even lead to death. In Jerry’s honor, we have included a classic video link for your enjoyment. We just hope that if you or your partner needs help managing sleep apnea symptoms, you will take it seriously enough to contact one of our North Carolina dentist’s offices as soon as possible.

Invisalign Works For North Carolina Teens Too!

At Sunrise Dental, we help patients of all ages from all over North Carolina to achieve the smile of their dreams. We realize that if you have a teenager in need of orthodontic treatment, you are probably already weighing the pros and cons of all the available options. You might be interested to know that we have some great alternative solutions to those attention-grabbing, time-consuming metal contraptions that most area practices feature.

Don’t misunderstand what we are saying. Conventional braces have had their place, and they have been utilized to transform an entire generation of smiles. It’s just that they have always left something to be desired. As such, we think you should consider Invisalign as an option since it has now been modified to work effectively on adolescent teeth, and it is probably the easiest way to get the job done.

Besides, this isn’t all about cosmetics. Sure, an orthodontic treatment can vastly improve your child’s appearance, but it will also help them keep their teeth healthier in the long run. You see, straighter teeth provide fewer places for harmful disease and decay causing substances to hide out. By straightening your teen’s teeth now with Invisalign, you are helping them to optimize their oral health, which will provide them with lifelong benefits.

Keep reading to hear more about what Invisalign can do for adult and teens alike, and then be sure to get in touch with Dr. Vice to schedule your consultation at one of our Research Triangle offices.

Invisalign Clear “Braces” Changed The Game

There is so much to say about Invisalign. But the first reason for choosing this kind of treatment for your teen is clear: Invisalign doesn’t have any impact on your teen’s appearance because this method does not require any metal for shifting teeth.

Rather than wires and brackets, Invisalign uses transparent, lightweight aligners made of plastic. These fit snugly over the teeth and are custom-built using advanced imagery to ensure a comfortable fit. These aligners gently guide your teeth into the more preferred position in small steps. You wear each set until it’s time to change aligners every two weeks or so.

There will be no time-consuming in-office adjustments, or harsh wires to break or poke you in the soft tissues at the back of your mouth. Your teen will simply pop in the new aligners when appropriate, and they will be good to go.

Another reason your teen will love Invisalign is that maintenance of the aligners couldn’t be any easier. Special brushes and tools that you need to keep regualar old braces clean, won’t be necessary. For cleaning, you simply remove the aligners and clean them under lukewarm water! You also get to keep brushing and flossing as usual throughout the process.

Since they’re removable, your teenager will have the ability to continue eating whatever their growing body demands without any dietary restrictions.

In the end, the results will be just as stunning as a conventional orthodontic treatment would deliver, but it won’t involve as much time or as many inconveniences. And your teen will love that they won’t have to sacrifice their appearance during treatment for the sake of improvements down the road.

All we can say is that Invisalign is a safe, subtle, fast and effective way to straighten out any annoying orthodontic issues. To find out if this program will work for you or your teen, all you have to do is schedule your orthodontic consultation with Dr. Vice.

Find Out More!

Invisalign can help you or your teen get the aesthetic results you want and need. It can also help you maintain a beautiful, healthy smile for years to come. To find out more, please contact Sunrise Dental today and set up an appointment with one of our Raleigh, Durham, Cary, or Chapel Hill, NC dentist’s offices.

More Good News About Tooth-Colored Dental Fillings

$

In an earlier post we shared a brief video clip about the composite, tooth-colored dental fillings that we feature at our North Carolina dentist’s office (with locations all over the Research Triangle). Today, we’d like to revisit that topic and provide you with a little more information about this great restorative dentistry solution. Keep reading and then be sure to get in-touch to schedule your next appointment with Dr. Vice and the Sunrise Dental team!

Tooth-Colored Dental Fillings Are Your Best Bet

For many years, dentists in Raleigh, NC (and everywhere else) have used a mix of mercury and other metals called amalgam for fillings. If you ever had a filling prior to the last few years, you are probably well acquainted with this style.

Truth be told, the effectiveness of these treatments has never been in question. Still, there have been some very real complaints about the metal itself. For starters, amalgam is anything but discreet and so it looks like a dark metallic blotch on your otherwise pretty white teeth. More than that, the old-style of fillings can actually make your tooth more vulnerable to fracture and cause damage to the nearby healthy tooth structures. Nobody has time for that!

That is why, at our practice, we now use a newer, safer, and more aesthetically-pleasing material for fillings: composite.

Composite consists of a blend of resins that lends itself well to the appearance of your natural teeth. Unlike metal, they will look and feel like they actually belong in your mouth. Hence the name tooth-colored dental fillings!

That means we can now fill a cavity in a way that won’t draw unwanted attention to your mouth and the composite resin we use will also have superior bonding properties that allow for increased longevity.

How It Works

Here’s the deal: when you come in for a tooth-colored dental fillings treatment, we will start out by numbing the relevant region of your mouth. And if you are anxious about the procedure, we can explore options for relaxing the rest of your body.

Then, we can clean the cavity by removing the decayed tissue. After the cavity has been cleared, we will apply the putty-like composite resin material in thin layers. We will be able to shape these layers to match the surface of your tooth.

Finally, our Sunrise Dental team will harden the resin with a high-intensity light and polish it to match the shade of your teeth. That’s all there is to it. Then you’ll be able to take your restored health, and your refurbished smile home with you!

No Need To Fear!

Even though the tooth-colored dental fillings procedure is easy, it can cause some anxiety, especially in children. To help our more nervous patients, we can offer two different types of dental sedation: nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. While we use oral sedation for more complicated procedures or very fearful adult patients, nitrous oxide is safe for all ages and is especially great for nervous kids!

Let Us Save Your Smile!

We hope this information has been helpful. If you think that you might have some level of decay and wish to take care of it with tooth-colored dental fillings, contact us ASAP!

Yes, we know that we are located in the tobacco capital of the world. But today we wanted to share a disconcerting video clip from our friends at the American Dental Association. Check it out and then be sure to contact us to schedule your next preventive dentistry checkup with Dr. Vice.

Our comprehensive oral exams and teeth cleanings can help keep your mouth clean and alert us to any emerging issues before it is too late to use conservative treatments. Just know that, if you still use tobacco products, you really need to take your dental care seriously.

A Good Dentist Can Kill Your Bad Breath

If you live in the Research Triangle of North Carolina, you owe it to yourself to come see what Dr. Vice can do for your smile. But we do more than make you look great. We also help with other behind-the-scenes dental issues. For example, if you suffer from a chronic condition known as halitosis, this can be extremely embarrassing and perhaps confusing. But we want you to know that there is plenty that you can do to improve your situation. In today’s post, we wanted to put forth some tips for fighting bad breath. Keep reading and then be sure to schedule your next preventive dentistry appointment at one of our convenient locations.

Don’t Grab Breath Mints!

It makes sense at the time. You get a nasty taste in your mouth, and so you grab a mint, cover it up, and move on. The only thing is that most mints are full of sugar, which is the real problem with mints. After the mint has dissolved in your mouth, all that remains is a sugary residue that actually feeds the bacteria causing your breath problems in the first place. If you go for mints, it can perpetuate a vicious cycle. If you must, try chewing on some sugar-free gum instead of breath mints.

Do Floss More Often!

Home hygiene is key. You will need to rely on some tools to help you get the job done. Did you know that overcoming chronic bad breath is actually a matter of destroying bacteria? We can tell you that brushing is a really great start. But dental floss is an even better weapon in this ongoing war. You should attempt to floss twice a day or more to drive bacteria out from the hard-to-reach areas in-between your teeth.

Pay Extra Attention To Your Tongue!

Many people don’t give their tongue its proper due. If you are dealing with chronic bad breath, take some time to scrape and brush your tongue. Do it at least twice a day, when you brush and floss! It will go a long way towards keeping bacteria on the run.

Water Is Always The Answer!

Did you know that keeping yourself hydrated is perhaps the best thing you can do to ward off bad breath? This is because saliva naturally eliminates bacteria in your mouth that is causing the bad breath. And in order for saliva to be produced, you need to drink lots of water. The awesome thing is that in many areas the tap water is infused with fluoride, which further protects your smile.

Schedule Regular Preventive Dental Appointments

Our preventive dentistry program will help you stay on the right path. And our team is up to date with the latest techniques. We utilize sophisticated computer technology for all patient evaluations to determine the condition of the patient’s mouth and what is the best possible treatment option for you!

Following the tips in today’s blog post and visiting our office every six months can be all it takes to keep your mouth free from harmful bacteria and bad breath!

Preventive Dentistry Helps Detect Cancer And More

Our Team is of the opinion that preventive dentistry is the key to a happy and healthy life. That’s why Dr. Vice strives to cover all the bases when you come in for your professional teeth cleanings and oral exams every 3-6 months. These are the times when we can do you the most good and really put our tools, training, and technology into action. Obviously, we would want to try and detect anything that seems amiss in your mouth early enough to be able to do something about it before it is too late for conservative treatments. This is especially true of oral cancer. Keep reading to hear all about how, together, we can keep you on the good road at every stage of life. Don’t forget to follow up and schedule your next visit to Sunrise Dental!

Telltale Signs Of Oral Cancer

Some oral cancer indicators include: white, red, or speckled lumpy spots; sores; raised bumps; open wounds; ulcers; bleeding in the mouth; pain when swallowing; difficulty moving your jaw; etc. Let us know ASAP if any of those things appear. And make sure you reduce your risk of contracting this deadly disease by keeping up with your preventive dentistry visits and knowing the following risk factors:

Tobacco

As we mentioned in a recent blog post, tobacco is NOT good for your smile. What’s more, research has shown that tobacco use is the #1 cause of oral cancer in the United States.

If you aren’t using tobacco, please don’t start. It dramatically increases your risk of oral and many, many other kinds of cancer. If you already smoke, chew, dip, or vape, you need to seriously think about quitting.

Alcohol

Alcohol abuse is another major risk factor as far as oral cancer goes. If you smoke and drink, that is a double-whammy. Alcohol dries out the soft tissues of your mouth. This can make it easier for the chemicals in tobacco to get into those tissues.

Junk Food

We always tell our patients like you to be mindful of what you put in your body. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables can actually lower your risk for mouth cancer.

Sun

Don’t over do your time in the sun. Sunburns have been linked not only to skin cancer, but to cancer on your lips as well.

Genetics

When you have a history of cancer your likelihood of developing oral cancer is much higher, which means you will need to be more cautious when it comes to the factors that you can control.

Sunrise Dental

As we already discussed, next to prevention, early diagnosis is the safest bet for beating oral cancer.

Coming to our office every 3-6 months will allow us to keep up with whatever is going on in your mouth. Our trained-eyes and modern preventive dentistry technologies will go a long way toward keeping you safe.

Too old for braces? No problem! You can fix crooked, crowded, or gapped teeth at any age without using metal brackets and wires. The Invisalign clear aligner system that we use is far more comfortable than standard braces. And they are actually removable, which makes eating more enjoyable, and cleaning a snap. No dietary restrictions or weird tools will be required. And treatment can be completed in only about one year’s time, rather than 2-3 long years!

Widespread Dental Damage? It Might Be Time For Dental Veneers!

If your smile is worse for wear, you’ll be happy to know that our dental veneers are a great a catch-all solution. These thin coverings are made of porcelain and are used to cover up years of various dental damage. Veneers get attached directly to the front of your teeth after a layer of enamel is removed. This removal is a minimally invasive step and simply ensures that they will be a good fit. When dental veneers are cemented to the front surfaces of your teeth, the porcelain material becomes extremely sturdy and resistant to damage.

Do You Have A Gummy Smile? Reshaping & Recontouring Can Even Things Out!

Want to correct an overly gummy smile? We can get the job done with our laser gum reshaping therapy. This forward-looking laser system allows us to reshape your gum line involving less healing time, less discomfort, and a lot more precision than when it had to be done by hand. We can also recontour your teeth using the same laser technology.

Not Ready To Go Big? Dental Bonding Is Perfect For Minor Flaws!

Boost Your Oral Health With Preventive Dentistry

$

If you want to enjoy the benefits of a healthy, great-looking smile, you will need to find a dentist in North Carolina that you can trust to visit every six months, and you will also need to commit to putting in some work every day at home. That’s why, for today’s post, we wanted to talk about what makes for a great oral hygiene routine. Keep reading, and then be sure to get in touch to schedule your next preventive dentistry checkup with Dr. Vice at Sunrise Dental. We can’t wait to see your smiling face in one of our chairs!

Start Your Mornings Off The Right Way

We know, mornings can be rough. But brushing your teeth for at least two minutes is a great way to start your day. Just don’t wait until after you’ve had your coffee, eggs and toast. Seriously! Here’s the deal: if you’ve been brushing your teeth after breakfast you could actually be doing more harm than good. That is because plaque acids from food actually soften the enamel, and something as gentle as brushing your teeth can scrape and damage it. You will want to wait at least 30 minutes between eating and brushing whenever possible.

You may still want to leave the house with a fresh-feeling mouth, so we suggest rinsing with a fluoride-fortified mouthwash. Then, throughout the day, you will want to drink lots of water, and be careful with what you put into your body (avoid added sugars, etc.). These things can make a big difference.

End Your Evenings On A Strong Note

We know that somedays are a real whirlwind, and we know that your teeth and gums won’t always be top of mind. But once you have had time to unwind and enjoy your evening meal, you should brush your teeth one last time. Then, go ahead and floss. Flossing is so important to your oral health and continued well-being because it reaches those obscure places your toothbrush won’t ever be able to get to. The spaces between your teeth are some of the most sensitive spots in your mouth, and if you don’t keep them clean, gum disease and tooth decay are going to turn up in those places where you can’t ever detect them until it is too late. That won’t be a pretty mess to clean up!

Book Your Preventive Dentistry Exams Every 3-6 Months

The work you do at home is all to the good. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing are essential for preserving the health and beauty of your smile. But these things must be done in conjunction with professional dental exams. That’s why we look forward to seeing you every 3-6 months for a thorough preventive dentistry checkup. These visits will allow us to look after your teeth and gums and help you remain healthy and happy. Each time you are here, we can give you a professional-strength teeth cleaning, screen you for oral health problems, offer suggestions for further prevention, and we can even talk about your other concerns, like sleep apnea, for example. There’s so much that we can do for you, but we have to see you regularly to make a difference in your life.

Let Sunrise Dental Keep You On Track!

If you have been inspired by today’s post, just contact us online today to arrange for a preventive dentistry exam. Dr. Vice will get you smiling BIG in no time!

Laser Periodontal Treatment

$
0
0

The truth is, lasers have revolutionized oral care. Although laser periodontal treatment is relatively new, it is already a proven method of treatment according to the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). If you have received the diagnosis that you have periodontal or gum disease, then laser periodontal treatment could be the treatment you need.

Laser periodontal treatment replaces the need to cut the gums and does not require stitches like traditional gum surgery, which has a reputation for being painful with a long recovery time. After surgery, you will have greatly reduced pain in your gums. And with that, you’ll be able to recover faster and get back to enjoying a pain-free life.

How Does It Work?

The laser is a very effective tool in treating periodontal disease because the laser uses heat to strip away the diseased gum. The laser will only target infected tissue and leaves the healthy tissue in place. We will then use the laser again to heat the area and form a clot. This will protect the tissue by sealing it. Your body will then be able to heal naturally so that the gum pockets improve and your teeth become more stable. Because your gums have not been cut, you will not have to worry about having stitches, problems with bleeding after the operation, or post-op infections.

The Benefits

There are many reasons to why you should choose laser periodontal treatment over traditional gum surgery, including the following:

  • Less trauma to your gums and teeth.
  • Easy recovery with minimal bleeding.
  • Your gum tissues will stay preserved.
  • Reduces risk of infection.

Do you have questions about the specifics of the laser? Give us a call! Besides answering your questions, our staff would be happy to inspect your mouth and gums in order to see if you are a good candidate for laser periodontal treatment.

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

The truth is, most people are unaware that they grind their teeth. Why? Because it normally happens during sleep. Teeth grinding, medically called bruxism, is often caused by anxiety and stress, or it can be caused by an abnormal bite or missing/crooked teeth. Sleep apnea is also a known cause of teeth grinding. People who grind their teeth daily or nightly can cause permanent damage if this problem is not addressed. Do you think you may be suffering from bruxism? Read on to learn more about this condition and what you can do about it.

What is Causing Bruxism?

Bruxism is one way that your body manifests stress and anxiety without your mind even being aware. Also, substance abuse, sleep apnea, and bite and teeth alignment issues can cause bruxism.

The Symptoms

If you often wake up with a sore mouth and tight jaw, then you might be suffering from bruxism. The next time you are stressed, pay attention to what is going on with your mouth. Do you find yourself clenching your jaw and/or grinding your teeth? If so, then please come into our office at Sunrise Dental for an examination of your teeth and mouth. Also, if you notice that your teeth have started to wear down, this is another red flag that you might be suffering from bruxism. However, it’s important to know that some people will grind their molars, so teeth wear might not always be visible.

What Happens If This Goes Untreated?

If bruxism goes untreated, you could start to fracture or even lose your teeth. Teeth grinding wears the teeth down to the stumps. Correcting this problem could require bridges, crowns, implants, and partial or complete dentures to restore your smile and bite.

Your Treatment Options

If any of the symptoms mentioned on this page sound familiar to you, please tell our dentists at your next appointment. We will inspect the wear patterns on your teeth and also examine your jaw. This will help us determine if you have bruxism. Oftentimes, we will prescribe a mouth guard, which will prevent your teeth from touching when you sleep. It’s important to always sleep with your mouthguard! Before long, you will start waking up pain-free and much better rested. If the problem is more severe, we might refer you to a sleep specialist who can help you create a plan to treat your bruxism over the long term. This could mean treating sleep apnea, finding healthy means of stress relief, or something else. Do you have questions? Do you believe you suffer from teeth grinding? Please call our office.

Preserving Your Smile

You brush your teeth twice a day, every day. You floss once a day and regularly rinse your mouth out with mouthwash. You enjoy a healthy diet, chew sugar-free gum, and avoid food and drinks that can stain your teeth. You’re doing everything you should to keep your mouth healthy, right?   Wrong! While you can and should do all of the things listed above, they’re not enough to keep your mouth healthy for the long term. To make sure your mouth is as healthy as can be, you need to visit the dentist every six months.   The reason for this is simple: there’s only so much you can do for your oral health on your own. Your dentist is here to help you fill in the gaps. Our dentist will keep your teeth clean, monitor your oral health, and more!

Keeping Your Teeth Clean

It’s essential to brush and floss your teeth on your own, but even the strictest oral hygiene routine can’t compare to the cleaning you’ll get at the dentist’s office. Your trained dental hygienist will make sure that every nook and cranny is sparkling clean, down to the gum line and below. This twice-yearly cleaning will help you preserve your dental health for the long term, too.

Monitoring Your Oral Health

Your dentist is trained to spot things that you can’t. Every six months, your dentist will check your mouth for signs of oral cancer. She’ll be on the lookout for signs of cavities and tooth decay. From time to time, she’ll also take X-rays to make sure that no problems are developing out of sight. Doing all of this allows the dentist to spot problems early, when they can more easily be corrected.

Improving Your Dental Education

If you regularly follow the news, you know that there are constantly new studies coming out showing the health benefits (or harms) of this or that. The same is true for dentistry. It’s a constantly evolving field, and the advice you were given ten, twenty, or thirty years ago might not be best practice today. The only way to stay on top of it all is to visit the dentist regularly. Your dentist will let you know about the latest findings and tell you if there’s anything you should be changing in your routine.

Make an Appointment Today!

With all of the above in mind, we have to ask: when was the last time you visited the dentist? If it was more than six months ago, make an appointment with us. We’re here to get your dental health back on track and make sure your mouth stays healthy for years to come. Give Sunrise Dental a call today.

Don’t Forget to Floss!

You know you should floss at least once a day, every day. In fact, you’re probably reminded of it every time you visit the dentist for a regular checkup and cleaning. While it’s easy to find seemingly endless dental floss options in just about any store out there, you should consider taking the time to find the dental floss that’s perfect for your smile’s specific needs. Here’s what you should be looking for, according to your dental concerns and personal preferences.   Worried about bad breath? There are numerous types of mint-flavored dental flosses and dental floss picks on the market for you to try. They are healthier alternatives to chewing sugary gum or popping a few mints in your mouth. These options are also great for when you’re traveling and you don’t have the space to store or access to mouthwash.   Have braces or other orthodontic work? An orthodontic floss threader paired with waxed floss can help make flossing easier for those currently undergoing orthodontic treatment. It is much like threading a needle, since you will be able to easily slide the waxy floss between your teeth and above the wire.   Having trouble reaching all of your teeth? Electric flossers can make getting into all of the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth easier! Whether you’re teaching your child how to floss properly or you’re simply not a fan of putting your hands in your mouth, electric floss is both safe and effective for a range of ages and dental care needs.   Looking for plaque removal? Research has shown that both electric and standard flosses can help you remove more plaque from between your teeth when paired with regular brushing. Since the bacteria in plaque causes cavities and tooth decay and it can lead to gum disease, it helps to make flossing an integral part of your dental care routine.   No matter what their specific oral health care needs may be, flossing should be a crucial part of everyone’s dental care routine. While you may prefer one type of floss over another, it’s important to make sure the floss you choose has the American Dental Association seal of approval on the packaging. That’s how you know you and your family are getting the best, scientifically proven products to care for your teeth and gums.   If you have any questions about what type of floss you should be using or how to properly floss to get the most out of your routine, give us a call at Sunrise Dental!

If you’re a parent, you’re probably all too familiar with the daily battle of trying to get your children to brush and floss their teeth – it can feel more like pulling teeth! Instead of fighting with them or making it an unpleasant experience, it’s important to encourage them to stick to a fun routine they can eventually follow on their own. The days of struggling to get your children to take care of their teeth can be numbered if you follow these helpful tips.   Set a Good Example for Them   You know the old saying: “Monkey see, monkey do.” The same thing applies to your children. They look up to you as their parent, which means you can easily set the tone for their dental care practices by following good dental hygiene yourself.     Let Your Children Practice on You   While it may be a little uncomfortable at first, you can allow your kids to practice their tooth brushing skills on you. If you make it seem enjoyable, they will want to experience it for themselves! It will also give them a sense of responsibility for your health and happiness.     Try Brushing & Flossing to Music   Kids love music, so if you add it to your dental care routine, they will dance along without even noticing they’re brushing their teeth! You can even purchase tooth brushes that play music while they brush. As for flossing? Set a timer for two minutes and start the music. Once the timer goes off and the music stops, they’re all done!     Use a Flavorful Toothpaste & a Fun Toothbrush   There are so many different kinds of toothpastes available for children today. Your children may not like the traditional minty taste, so opt for a bubblegum or cherry-flavored toothpaste to tame their taste buds instead.   Your kids may also be more inclined to brush their teeth with a toothbrush that has their favorite character on it. From Spider-Man to Disney princesses, you can find almost anything that appeals to your children’s interests!     Family Dentistry Services     Sunrise Dental encourages you to try these tips with your children to help them stick to a healthy dental routine for life! Of course, in addition to regular brushing and flossing, we also encourage you to schedule bi-annual cleanings for your kids. Our dental care professionals are here to make going to the dentist a fun experience for patients of all ages. Make an appointment for your little ones today!

How to Overcome Dental Anxiety

Going to the dentist can be anxiety-inducing for many people; we give advice on how to overcome your fears.

If you have been avoiding a checkup with your dentist because of fear or anxiety, you are not alone. As many as 9 to 15% of Americans avoid going to the dentist because of their fears, which adds up to roughly 30 to 40 million people (Colgate.com). People fear the dentist for a host of reasons, but it’s easy to understand that many have a fear of pain, blood, potentially being sedated or having surgery, to name only a few.   Should you be one of the millions of people in this country that fear being examined by a dentist, we have a few ideas that could help you to overcome your anxiety for good.   Acknowledge the Problem The first step in overcoming your fear is to acknowledge why you are feeling this way. Whether you are afraid of pain, the potential of surgery or even the cost of a procedure, it is important to discover why you feel this way and begin to take the proper steps to overcome it.   Explain Your Fears to Loved Ones and Those at Your Dentist’s Office Once you have discovered the root cause of your anxiety, it is important to let the people who are closest to you know you are having these feelings. Together, you can come up with a plan to bring to your dentist. Your dentist’s office will normally be used to patients having these issues and should be accommodating of your needs.   Accept That You Still May Have Anxiety, but Understand That It Is Natural If you’re like most people, simply stating the fears you have won’t magically make them go away, but it will allow you to better cope. Once you have explained your fears to your dentist and those closest to you, you can take the next step and go in for your surgery or checkup. Now that you have made you fears clear, your dentist will be more cognizant of your problems and should make sure you are as comfortable as possible when you go in for your visit.   Remember, the only way to overcome dental anxiety is to work at it, and letting your anxiety get in the way of proper dental care can have lasting repercussions for your oral health. Reach out, ask for help, and get the care you need. Your smile will thank you for it.
